Why has Tsipras asked for Parliament’s confidence?

In the final stretch of his mandate, just over two weeks from the European and municipal elections and with the polls against it, Alexis Tsipras has gone on to attack and has asked for Parliament’s confidence in an attempt to regain popular support.

The Prime Minister took advantage of his intervention in the first of the three days of debate to review the four years of his management and to present some of the fiscal and social measures announced on Tuesday at an unforeseen press conference.

This is, above all, a package of VAT sales and the restoration of the thirteenth pay of the retirees. Tsipras attacked toughly the opposition leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who takes a broad advantage in all the polls.

The prime minister argued that it was the Government of New Democracy that caused the economy to lose a third of its wealth, took the retirees to poverty, imposed the law of the jungle on labor law and caused unemployment to reach unprecedented rates.

“We clenched our teeth and put the public finances in order. We share the burden all we could and we gave priority to combating the consequences of the humanitarian crisis in the country”, he said.

Although the prime minister no longer has a majority of his own in Parliament, Tsipras has been able to ensure the support of a number of members who have abandoned their respective groups in recent months. (May 9, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
