WHY SOME STARS ARE EXTRAGALACTIC?

Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain) / Researchers from Institute of Astrophysics in Canary Islands (IAC) and the University of Concepcion (Chile) have discovered in the Milky Way a new family of red giant stars that have a strange chemical composition, whose origin is believed these are extragalactic.

IAC has reported today that the discovery of these stars, which has been published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, has been carried out when researchers were looking for fossil relics of the early Milky Way.

The new stars are not only different from those of the Milky Way because of their chemical composition but also these are different because of their orbital properties, suggesting a possible extragalactic origin for the experts who participated in the study.

IAC has explained that the researchers found a stellar chemically atypical population compared to stars in the Milky Way or even any known galactic globular cluster.

These stars are very poor in magnesium, somewhat unexpected considering their high levels of other elements like nitrogen, aluminum and iron.

These could come from globular clusters that were dissociated in the past and whose distribution of elements is not observed in any galactic globular cluster with similar chemical properties, according to the study. (October 18, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
