World exceeds 200 million cases of covid-19, says Johns Hopkins

EFE / Washington.- On Wednesday, the world exceeded 200 million cases of covid-19 with the United States, India and Brazil as the countries with the most infections, according to the independent count of Johns Hopkins University.

At just after 5.30 p.m. Eastern US time (21.30 GMT), the counter of the American university registered a total of 200,031,896 infections globally.

The number of cases around the world has doubled in just over six months, since it was last January 26 when 100 million infections of covid-19 were reached, according to the same source.

That means that 200 million infections have been reached in half the time it took to reach the first 100 million, since these were registered more than a year after the original cases of covid-19 were detected in Wuhan (China) in December 2019.

The new milestone comes at a time of growing global concern over the spread of the delta variant of the new coronavirus, which is twice as transmissible as the original virus that sparked the pandemic and may lead to more hospitalizations.

COVID-19 infections double

The World Health Organization (WHO) already warned last week that covid-19 infections had doubled in the last month in five of its six geographical regions mainly due to the circulation of the delta variant, already present in al minus 124 countries.

Although the vaccination campaign has slowed the increase in infections in recent months in several rich countries, inequality in global access to vaccines, coupled with the expansion of the delta variant, has caused dramatic situations in nations with fewer resources.

The situation is also beginning to be worrying in some countries: in the United States, where according to The New York Times there are at least 93 million people who refuse to be vaccinated, experts believe that a new peak in the number of infections is inevitable by the end of the year.

The countries with the most infections

According to data from Johns Hopkins, the United States continues to be the country with the most covid-19 infections in the world, with more than 35.3 million, followed by India (31.7 million), Brazil (19.9 million ), Russia (6.2 million), France (6.2), the United Kingdom (5.9 million) and Turkey (5.8).

They are followed in the list by Argentina (4.9 million), Colombia (4.8 million) and Spain (4.5 million); while further down the list are Mexico (2.8 million), Peru (2.1) and Chile (1.6).

The global death toll exceeds 4.2 million, of which more than 614,000 in the United States; more than 558,000 in Brazil; more than 425,000 in India; more than 241,000 in Mexico and more than 196,000 in Peru, indicates the university. (August 4, 2021, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
